Travel: Walkway over the Hudson

I don't like heights and I'm not too fond of bridges, but the Walkway over the Hudson is an experience to be had. This weekend I did it and if you're looking for a nice few hours with the kids, this is it. My three children and I took a walk over the bridge this weekend. The views were wonderful and we really enjoyed the time together. There were families, couples, bikers, joggers and dogs all enjoying the day.

A few tips if you plan on going:

1. Enjoy a history lesson: Read the history of the Walkway over the Hudson on their website before you go.
2. The parking lot was convenient: You can find a spot on the street, but the $5 parking lot on Parker Avenue in Poughkeepsie (that's the side we went to) is still a great deal and puts you in perfect position to start your walk.
3. Bring your camera: The views are amazing and you'll want to capture those family moments.
4. Bring sunscreen: Now that it's hot out, the walk can be long and hot, with the sun beating down on you. Two of us ended up with sunburns.
5. Bring snacks and drinks: There are places to sit before and during your walk, so take a break if you need to and stay hydrated.
6. Enjoy a history lesson: Read the history of the Walkway over the Hudson on their website before you start your journey.
7. Expand the experience: have your young ones write a story about the walkway, draw a picture of it or make it out of sticks, etc.

It was a nice, affordable outing for us that took a few hours to enjoy (depending on how long you want to walk). We topped it off with some ice cream after at home!
